We have reached the end of this series on creativity!
This blog series itself was an example of how creative solutions to problems and questions can lead us to producing a piece of work that points to God. The more we explored and analyzed this concept of creative problem solving, the closer we traveled to a revelation about God's character. Even in this written series about how to be creative, creativity itself was being used. Pretty freaky to consider; yet also the coolest thing ever.
The chain theory suggests that as we build downward we are building toward a deeper understanding that already existed. Like the ground beneath our feet. It's there but we don't see or consider it until we dig. That's why I believe that creativity is less about invention and more about discovery. Stories I write are already written the way they should be somewhere in the succession of logic and rules of storytelling, I just have to keep digging to find it.
The more we dig in and get better at our craft, the closer we come to the rules that God established for creativity in nature. Man’s sense of beauty and creativity comes from principles and images that are revealed to us in God’s creation. Beauty and nature are inseparable in rule, organization, and function.
People can tell whether or not that stroke of paint on canvas was informed by knowledge. If it is purposeful and improves the painting then it's good and correct. But if it's just fluff or fun then it looks wrong. That's the difference between creativity, and creative problem solving.
Fiction is not the escape from reality but rather the application of the reality to find a new reality. Reality gives us building blocks but you put them together any way you choose. A creative person is simply someone who makes a bridge with the blocks to reach another level.
That is what creativity is. It's rearranging the building blocks of normal things that every person understands. Everyone knows what creativity is but they've never seen it like this. This explanation itself is a creative solution.
This is somewhat ironic because we started out with something bland, that we dismantled, rearranged, and then put back into use only for it to become bland again. We recycled it! It's amazing how many things we take for granted. Everyone looks at 3D printers as an engineering marvel that has depth and complexity but no one looks at a chisel and marble block and thinks, whoa look at that wonder! But in fact it is!! Sculpture is as big of an accomplishment proportionally as the 3D printer. The inventor of the chisel had to first of all, come up with the concept, which required a huge amount of creative insight. Nothing like it had ever been done before. The closest thing he had was the knowledge of what a stick could push mud, and a very hard rock could change the shape of other rocks. Then after making it he had to teach others how to make it and use it. Before the chisel there was the rock itself that could be used in the exact same way, maybe not as effectively and that is the key key key word. Efficiency and effectively are two words that are crucial in understand creative problem solving. Those words are what make the chisel, not a random action, but a creative solution to a problem. Creative problem solving is the foundation of man's advancement.
The ultimate purpose of art is to create things that reflect the beauty and glory of God so it is no wonder why we see that departure so direct cause it's out there literally for us to see. It's a visual medium.
